In the Musical Theatre – Dance – Self-Tape Competition, contestants are required to submit a video recording of themselves performing a dance piece in the Broadway or musical theatre style. The self-tape must be submitted in advance for judging prior to the CMTC event. This competition offers valuable exposure to industry representatives who specialize in discovering and representing theatrical talent. Musical Theatre – Dance Competition Rules:
- The Musical Theatre – Dance Competition is open to contestants of all ages.
- This competition takes place prior to CMTC and is submitted via self-tape.
- Contestants are responsible for choreographing and performing a dance piece in the Broadway or Musical Theatre style.
- Music selection must be from the Broadway or Off-Broadway musical theatre repertoire.
- Only solo performers are permitted. No additional performers should be included in the submission.
- The self-tape should be approximately 60–90 seconds in length.
- Registered contestants must submit one (1) musical theatre dance self-tape on or before March 15, 2026, using the Musical Theatre Self-Tape Submission Form found on the Contestant Hub page.
- Do not include a slate in the submission.
- This competition will be judged virtually by industry representatives prior to CMTC.
- Judging criteria include:
- Technical ability (execution, control, precision)
- Musicality and timing
- Style and interpretation
- Stage presence and performance quality
- Overall potential for theatrical productions

- Make sure your whole body is visible when dancing.
- Good lighting so judges can see lines and feet clearly.
- Hair and makeup are tidy. Present yourself as if you’re attending a live audition.
- Fitted clothing (nothing baggy).
- Solid colours (avoid busy patterns/logos).
- Contrast with your background (don’t blend into the wall).
- Hair secured off your face.
- Minimal jewelry.
- Barefoot or correct footwear for the style.
- Something that hints at character but stays fitted.
- Jazz shoes or character heels (if appropriate).
